Harvey storms to Carrera Cup pole

With the fastest ever Carrera Cup lap of Brands Hatch, Tim Harvey stormed to pole position for the opening round of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB today (Saturday 31 March). After terrible conditions in pre-race testing on Friday, the weather was bright and dry for the half-hour qualifying session.

With a tremendous run in qualifying, Harvey (Red Line Racing) dominated the session and was four-tenths clear of the pack. “That’s quite good,” he said with a smile. “I’m very pleased. We wanted to be on the front row and we’re now leading the championship!” The point for pole position means that Harvey leads the points’ table ahead of the opening race later this afternoon.

Behind Harvey, a gaggle of cars were very evenly matched as seven-tenths of a second covered the next nine cars. Leading the chase of Harvey was Steven Kane (Motorbase Performance). “That’s my first time in the dry with the car, so I’m happy with the job I’ve done. I know there is more to come,” said the former F3 ace.

Almost matching Kane’s time was James Sutton (Red Line Racing), who was an impressive third fastest ahead of his Carrera Cup debut. “That’s pretty good and it’s where we wanted to be. I’m pleased to be up with Steven Kane,” said fellow single-seater convert Sutton. Fourth fastest was Michael Caine (Team Parker Racing). “We’d like to be a bit closer to Tim,” admitted Caine of his former team mate.

Sam Hancock (Motorbase Performance) was fifth fastest, but troubled by a handling problem. “There is a small thing making a massive difference. I know we can go quicker than that,” he said. Completing the top six, and hampered by the very wet conditions during Friday’s testing, was James Pickford in his first race weekend with QME Sport.

Topping the pro-am category in a fine seventh place was Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing). A big late effort catapulted him ahead of Jon Barnes (Porsche Motorsport) and Rob Collard (Team Parker Racing) and put Rice clear in the pro-am category. “That was the plan. I had another go on my new tyres as I knew there was plenty of time to go in the session,” he said.

Second in pro-am was Andy Britnell (Motorbase Performance), who had just moved to the top of the pro-am times when Rice put in his best lap. “Nigel found a monster lap,” admitted Britnell. “There was a terrible lack of grip to begin with,” he added. Charles Bateman (Team Parker Racing) was third in pro-am in a car borrowed for the weekend after his own car was damaged in testing, ahead of David Ashburn (Trackspeed) and Pete Osborne (Team O).
